ChatGPT vs. Claude — the honest comparison

No winner hype, no affiliate angle. What really sets the two apart — and which tool is worth it for which task, if you're self-employed and have no time to play around.

In short

There's no overall winner — and whoever sells you one usually wants to sell you something. Roughly:

  • Claude is often the calmer, more precise writing aid: long, nuanced text, clean adherence to complex instructions, very long documents in one go.
  • ChatGPT is the broader tool: image generation, voice mode, web access, a large ecosystem of integrations and "GPTs".
  • For most self-employed people one of them is enough. Which one is decided by your most frequent task — not the logo.

These are hands-on impressions, not lab numbers — and both providers iterate weekly. Take the table as a starting point, not the last word.

Which for which task?

Take ChatGPT if …

  • you regularly need images or want to use the voice mode.
  • you value web research right inside the tool and a large ecosystem of integrations.
  • you like working with ready-made "GPTs" for recurring tasks.

Take Claude if …

  • your focus is writing and editing and tone matters to you.
  • you process long documents in one go (contracts, reports, whole email threads).
  • you care that complex instructions are followed precisely.
The honest truth: the difference between the two is smaller than the difference between a bad and a good prompt. Learn one of them properly instead of jumping between both.

Data protection: the same homework for both

Both are US providers. Both offer data controls on business plans — no training on your inputs, some EU options. What matters isn't the logo but the plan you choose, your settings, and whether you put personal data in at all. The five questions you run before the first click are the same for both.

Which is better, ChatGPT or Claude?
There's no overall winner. Many find Claude stronger at long, nuanced writing and at following instructions cleanly; ChatGPT scores with ecosystem, images, voice mode and web access. The task decides.
Which is better for writing?
Both write very well. Many feel Claude's tone is a touch more natural, ChatGPT is strong at short structured outputs. The difference is smaller than the effect of a good prompt.

Usually not. Start with one paid plan, learn it properly, and only get the second if a concrete task regularly pushes you to a limit.
What do they cost?
Single plans are roughly €20-25/month in early 2026. Both have free tiers with limits and business plans with better guarantees. Check the current status yourself.

Both US providers, both with data controls on business plans. What matters is the plan, your settings and whether you put personal data in at all — not the logo.
